About the project
A landmark Lebanese restaurant in Mayfair reborn with a refined balance of heritage and contemporary elegance.
In the heart of Mayfair, Al Sultan has been serving London’s elite for over three decades. In July 2015, the restaurant reopened after a complete redesign and rebuild by IDEA International Studio, with a vision to merge the intricate beauty of traditional Islamic patterns with the sophistication of contemporary European design. The goal was to create an inviting, modern environment that remains true to its cultural roots while speaking to today’s cosmopolitan audience.
The interior’s subdued, almost monochromatic palette sets an understated tone of elegance. Warmth radiates from the aluminum brass-toned latticed grills lining the walls, subtly evoking Middle Eastern opulence. These grills — central to the design concept — reinterpret traditional Islamic motifs in a softer, contemporary way. Each bespoke, laser-cut aluminum panel is powder-coated in golden hues and illuminated from both front and back, producing a captivating sense of depth and volume within the intimate space.
The latticed grill elegantly flows around the soft, pebble-like silhouette of the pure white lacquered bar, weaving itself visually throughout the restaurant. This interplay of heritage, craftsmanship, and modern aesthetics creates an atmosphere that is both timeless and relevant, ensuring Al Sultan remains a destination of choice for refined dining in London.
